Retarders
Variousretardersareavailablewhich
functionagainsttheengine,driveline,
ortransmission.Thesearedevices
thatuseyourengine’spowertoslow
downyourvehicle.Theysavewear
andtearonyourservicebrakesand
canbeasafetyfeature,too,because
theycankeepyourbrakesfrom
overheating.
Ideally,youshouldalwaysslowyour
vehiclewithyourretarder(where
permittedbylaw)anduseyourservice
brakesonlyforstoppingcompletely.
Operatingthiswaywillgreatlyprolong
thelifeofyourbrakes.
WARNING
Donotuseanyofthevehicle’s
retardersinanysituationthat
requiresanimmediatestopand/or
insituationsofpoortraction(such
aswet,icyorsnowcoveredroads).
Tryingtousetheretarderinstead
oftheservicebrakesmaycausea
lossofvehiclecontrolwhichmay
resultinanaccidentinvolvingdeath
orpersonalinjury.
