Subject: Compressor Oil Passing & Air Operated Engine Oil
Cleaners
It has come to our attention that some engine oil cleaning devices use brake system air
pressure to function.
Since this particular accessory is connected directly to the engine oil supply and the air
system, it must be considered when troubleshooting any complaint involving the air
brake generation system, particularly:
A. Compressor oil passing
B. Air Dryer function and/or “cycling”
Because the air assisted engine oil cleaner obtains its supply of air from the downstream
or dry side of the Bendix air dryer, there exists a possibility of oil entering the air brake
system without being stopped by the air dryer.
Where this type of oil cleaner is in use, it should be tested periodically for air
consumption, air leakage (both internal and external) as well as for oil “backflow” into the
brake system. Contact the oil cleaner manufacturer for proper test procedures.
Since daily reservoir draining is not required when a Bendix air dryer is in use, it is
possible to accumulate a substantial amount of oil in the brake system reservoirs before
it is discovered and its source repaired. It is recommended that routine reservoir
draining be undertaken when this type of engine oil cleaner is in use.
